Beyond Romance became the core of Zalando’s Valentine’s campaign, translating the brand’s message of inclusive love into a cinematic moving-image format.
The project demonstrates how CG environments can carry emotional narrative — extending a compact studio build into landscapes that feel imagined, but never detached from the performance inside them.
The camera follows emotional logic. It stays close until a gesture opens, then pulls back to reveal how far the world extends beyond it. Transitions are built as continuous moves rather than cuts: a rise through cloud cover resolves into a water reflection, a single falling petal fills the frame and releases into the next scene. Focus lies on believable integration and readable composition: performance first, environment as its atmosphere.
Custom HDRI captures and 3D scans of each set established exact lighting and geometric continuity between stage and CG. Practical elements were kept minimal — bed sheets, a two-metre moss island, a petal chaise lounge — and everything around them was built digitally: volcanic terrain, cloud layers, standing water, waterfalls, floral fields. Each vignette was developed through storyboards, previs, layout, lookdev, rendering and grading.
Three worlds, one continuous landscape: a bed embedded in volcanic rock, moss islands adrift in still water, a garden on a hill. Everything else exists to hold the moment inside it.
